A thoracic aortic aneurysm was diagnosed in a 6-month-old male Leonberg dog by use of radiography, transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The aneurysm was associated with a twisted ascending aorta and dilatation of several other thoracic arteries (pulmonary trunk, brachiocephalic trunk, and left subclavian artery). Histologic examination of the aorta revealed cystic medial necrosis, with disruption of the elastic network, collagen fibers, and the muscle glycoprotein fibrillin-1. The dam and sire of the dog and 8 littermates were examined by use of transthoracic echocardiography. The sire and 1 male littermate also had an aneurysm of the ascending aorta. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first report of familial aortic aneurysm in dogs.  相似文献

The transmission of PVS by the cutting knife in potato cvs Norland, Kennebec and Russet Burbank was studied in the field and greenhouse. Field studies showed transmission to Norland via tuber infection was significantly less than for Kennebec and Russet Burbank (P = 0.01). However, significant cultivar differences were not found in the greenhouse (P = 0.05). Contamination of the cutting knife by cutting through sprouts resulted in significantly greater numbers of plants infected for cv Kennebec than when sprout contact was avoided (P = 0.05). Although the same trends were observed for cv Norland and Russet Burbank the differences were not significant (P = 0.05). Infectious PVS particles were readily recovered from materials commonly contacted during potato cultivation, storage and processing. Retention time of infectious PVS was usually greater when materials were held at 4°C and 100% relative humidity than at ambient greenhouse conditions. Retention times ranged from 0 hr (PVS not recovered) to 180 hr on unpainted wood. Results demonstrated the need for strict indexing and sanitation procedures during the production of PVS-free potato seed.  相似文献

Inductions and synchronizations of parturitions by the analogue PG F2alpha, Cloprostenol, were tested in cows under production conditions. The average time from induction to delivery is 40.5 hours (33-49 hours). No significant relation exists between the length of gravidity and the time of delivery induction (correlation coefficient = -0.325). A scheme was proposed from the system of calving days in cows to organize synchronized parturitions. In production conditions the induction and synchronization of cow parturitions cannot be recommended because amnions are retained frequently (69.7%). No relationship was demonstrated between gravidity length at the time of delivery induction and the order of parturition in the cow (first-calver-cow).  相似文献

Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) can be a source of biological control agents (BCA) of fire blight disease. Several species of LAB are inhabitants of plants and are currently used as biopreservatives of food because of their antagonistic properties against bacteria, and are considered as generally safe. Candidates to BCA were selected from a large collection of LAB strains obtained from plant environments. Strains were first chosen based on the consistency of the suppressive effect against E. amylovora infections in detached plant organs (flowers, fruits and leaves). Lactobacillus plantarum strains PC40, PM411, TC54 and TC92 were effective against E. amylovora in most of the experiments performed. Besides, strains PM411, TC54 and TC92 had strong antagonistic activity against E. amylovora and also other target bacteria, and presented genes involved in plantaricin biosynthesis (plnJ, plnK, plnL, plnR and plnEF). The strains efficiently colonized pear and apple flowers; they maintained stable populations for at least 1 week under high RH conditions, and survived at low RH conditions. They were effective in preventing fire blight on pear flowers, fruits and leaves, as well as in whole plants and in a semi-field blossom assay. The present study confirms the potential of certain strains of L. plantarum to be used as active ingredient of microbial biopesticides for fire blight control that could be eventually extended to other plant bacterial diseases.  相似文献

Cercospora leaf spot (CLS), caused by Cercospora beticola, is the most destructive foliar disease and is a problem in sugar beet production areas, such as Central High Plains (states of Colorado, Montana, Nebraska and Wyoming) in the United States. The disease can be controlled by strobilurin fungicides, referred to as quinone outside inhibitors (QoIs), with a single target site on C. beticola. Strobilurin resistance has been reported in beet production areas from the United States, including the Central High Plains. Although strobilurin resistance is quantitatively inherited, it is considered that it has low to medium heritability in the population. Effective diagnostic tools are required for the rapid detection of C. beticola strobilurin resistance. The study obtained a partial nucleotide sequence of the C. beticola cytochrome b gene and determined to a putative protein with ~386 amino acid residues. Eighty C. beticola isolates (2004–2011) from the Central High Plains were analyzed for mutations. We found a single nucleotide polymorphic (SNP) site which led to G143A mutation and was present in 2 C. beticola QoI-resistant isolates. Partial sequences obtained from 82 C. beticola QoI-sensitive isolates showed identical cytochrome b gene. We developed a PCR-RFLP assay that involved an in vitro digestion using Fnu4HI restriction enzyme for the rapid molecular detection of G143A mutation in the C. beticola population. Results indicated the PCR-RFLP assay was reliable, sensitive, and can be used for the rapid detection of C. beticola strobilurin resistance.  相似文献

Purpose

The assessment of climate change impacts on the sediment cycle is currently a primary concern for environmental policy analysts in Mediterranean areas. Nevertheless, quantitative assessment of climate change impacts is still a complex task. The aim of this study was to implement a sediment model by taking advantage of sediment proxy information provided by reservoir bottom deposits and to use it for climate change assessment in a Mediterranean catchment.

Materials and methods

The sediment model was utilised in a catchment that drains into a large reservoir. The depositional history of the reservoir was reconstructed and used for sediment sub-model implementation. The model results were compared with gauged suspended sediment data in order to verify model robustness. Then, the model was coupled with future precipitation and temperature scenarios obtained from climate models. Climatological model outputs for two emission scenarios (A2 and B2) were simulated and the results compared with a reference scenario.

Results and discussion

Model results showed a general decrease in soil moisture and water discharge. Large floods, which are responsible for the majority of sediment mobilisation, also showed a general decrease. Sediment yield showed a clear reduction under the A2 scenario but increased under the B2 scenario. The computed specific sediment yield for the control period was 6.33 Mg ha?1 year?1, while for the A2 and B2 scenarios, it was 3.62 and 7.04 Mg ha?1 year?1, respectively. Furthermore, sediment transport showed an increase in its time compression, i.e. a stronger dependence of total sediment yield from the largest event contributions.

Conclusions

This study shows a methodology for implementing a distributed sediment model by exploiting reservoir sedimentation volumes. This methodology can be applied to a wide range of catchments, given the high availability of reservoir sedimentation data. Moreover, this study showed how such a model can be used in the framework of a climate change study, providing a measure of the impact of climate change on soil erosion and sediment yields.  相似文献

The ectomycorrhizal community of an oak forest has been monitored monthly throughout fifteen months. Eight enzymatic activities secreted by the ectomycorrhizal root tips and involved in the mobilization of nutrients from soil organic matter have been measured using microplate assays, resulting in potential activity patterns of individual fungal species. Both the species structure of the community and the specific activity level of each individual species changed with the season and soil horizon. This versatility may be an adaptative response of the ectomycorrhizal fungal community to a highly variable environment. The results also suggest that some ectomycorrhizal fungi behave as occasional saprobes and contribute to the decomposition of soil organic matter and nutrient cycling together with true saprotrophic fungi.  相似文献

The contents of sugars, organic acids, total phenolic content, and the antioxidant activity were quantified in the flesh of red beet from conventional (CON), integrated (INT), organic (ORG), biodynamic (BD), and control farming systems using established methods. Significant differences were measured for malic acid, total phenolic content (TPC), and total antioxidant activity, where malic acid content ranged from 2.39 g kg(-1) FW (control) to 1.63 g kg(-1) FW (CON, ORG, and INT). The highest TPC was measured in BD and control samples (0.677 and 0.672 mg GAE g(-1), respectively), and the lowest in CON samples (0.511 mg GAE g(-1)). Antioxidant activity was positively correlated with TPC (r2=0.6187) and ranged from 0.823 μM TE g(-1) FW to 1.270 μM TE g(-1) FW in CON and BD samples, respectively, whereas total sugar content ranged from 21.03 g kg(-1) FW (CON) to 31.58 g kg(-1) FW (BD). The importance of sugars, organic acids, phenols, and antioxidants for human health, as well as for plant resilience and health, gained from this explorative study, is discussed and put into perspective.  相似文献

The influence of environmental factors on species richness and species composition may be manifested at different spatial levels. Exploring these relationships is important to understand at which spatial scales certain species and organism groups become sensitive to fragmentation and changes in habitat quality. At different spatial scales we evaluated the potential influence of 45 factors (multiple regression, PCA) on saproxylic oak beetles in 21 smaller broadleaved Swedish forests of conservation importance (woodland key habitats, WKH). Local amount of dead wood in forests is often assumed to be important, but two landscape variables, area of oak dominated woodland key habitats within 1 km of sites and regional amount of dead oak wood, were the main (and strong) predictors of variation in local species richness of oak beetles. The result was similar for red-listed beetles associated with oak. Species composition of the beetles was also best predicted by area of oak woodland key habitat within 1 km, with canopy closure as the second predictor. Despite suitable local quality of the woodland key habitats, the density of such habitat patches may in many areas be too low for long-term protection of saproxylic beetles associated with broadleaved temperate forests. Landscapes with many clustered woodland key habitats rich in oak should have high priority for conservation of saproxylic oak beetles.  相似文献
